Example of a Scenario for a Role-Play (Feedback Teacher Teacher)
German lesson, 12th form, vocational college, 22 students, sitting together at tables in groups of 4 to 6 students
The students are sitting at their tables, talking to each other when the lesson starts.
The teacher enters the classroom and announces that today he/she would like to kill two birds with one stone by :
- revising the lessons of the last three weeks
- checking the knowledge of each pupil verbally and marking it.
This will be done by asking questions concerning the subject material which will have to be answered by students he/she will pick out.
The students are getting restless, remarking that they are still quite insecure about some topics. Whereas some students are criticising the procedure matter-of-factly, others are venting their anger by shouting spontaneously into the classroom.
Especially one student, who is notorious for never doing his homework and for never revising before exams but who relies on his possibilities to cheat, is repeatedly shouting into the classroom: „You cannot do this to us, you haven’t announced it beforehand...“
The teacher ignores this, but asks the best student what she thinks about the procedure. She agrees to it which gives rise to a tumult in the classroom ...
Not being impressed by this the teacher continues as announced; the tumult ebbs away and is replaced by grumbling which is eventually followed by resignation. The aforementioned student leaves the classroom without any comment and doesn’t return till the break.
At the end of the lesson the majority of students has received bad marks and the teacher ends the lesson, saying: „Well, the next time you had better revise the topic.“
Information for the person giving feedback:
You were asked by your colleague to do a peer evaluation and to especially pay attention to his/her behaviour concerning restlessness in the classroom and impertinence of individual students.
You now give feedback to your colleague on the lesson just observed.
[This is just one example, if you do the role-play you could alter it according to your school and you would have to make up two more scenarios in order to be able to do two more rounds, so that each participant can play each role. Angelika Wollermann]
