1.1. The school

Catholic Public John Paul II Grammar School in Rzeszów

The school is run by the Congregation of the Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The school was founded on the initiative of the local Bishop Kazimierz Górny in 1997. The Congregation, however, started its educational activity already in 1627. It was then that the Servant of God Mother Zofia Czeska founded  the first ever all-girls’ school in Poland . It was situated in Krakow .

In His letter to the Congregation, Holy Father John Paul II defined the chief role our school should play in the society. He said that we ought to perceive school as an extended family home, in which values vital for the whole nation are constantly strengthened in ever new generations.

Our aim is to encourage students to sterling work, to instil a sense of responsibility into them and to teach them respect for other people. Doing all that, we want to remain faithful to the principles of our catholic faith and patriotic ideals.

The school in Rzeszów is coeducational. Altogether 667 students (at the age of 13-18) attend our Lower and Upper High School . The principal of the school,s. Anna Telus is a French teacher. 57 civil teachers, 4 sisters and 2 priests constitute our staff. The following subjects can be found in the students’ curriculum: Polish language, mathematics, physics, chemistry, history, biology, geography, art, music, social studies, ICT , PE and religious education. All students are required to study two foreign languages, e.g.: English, German, French, Italian or Latin.

To obtain the secondary-school certificate, students take their A-level exams after a 3-year course.

Extra classes organised by the vast majority of teachers provide students with comprehensive intellectual, spiritual, emotional and physical development- ‘a sound mind in a sound body.’ The most popular with students are the following: choir, dram groups, ship and aircraft modelling club, sports club, Caritas charity group and The Pope’s Friends.
